THE ART OF STACKING FIREWOOD

Many Austrian homes in the country are heated with wood, which means a lot of hard work cutting, splitting and piling firewood. But Austrians are not content to simply have a pile of wood ready for winter. The stacks must be neatly built and every piece a specified length. They don't like much airspace between pieces where birds or mice could build nests.

Properly used, firewood can add both insulation and beauty to a home.

Some also show artististic talent in stacking their firewood.

Then there are practical minds that build multi-purpose stacks of firewood.

Rounded stacks are a favorite on farms

Some people prefer towers

If you look carefully at the photo below, you can see a neatly squared manure pile in the background. A tourist asked me how they do this and I replied, "Austrian farmers have well-trained cows!"
